In a shocking move, Notre Dame Defensive Coordinator Mike Elko has accepted the same position at Texas A&M, according to multiple reports. New Aggies coach Jimbo Fisher has had high praise for Elko’s work. Fisher is familiar with Elko, having coached against him when the two were at Florida State and Wake Forest, respectively.
The news comes on the heels of a report just this week that said Elko would be back in South Bend next year, despite rumors. Elko leaves after just one year at Notre Dame.
Elko has long been regarded as one of the nation’s most highly-sought-after assistant coaches. His lateral move is somewhat puzzling, as many expected his next move to be as a head coach.
The Irish will be forced to scramble to find a new defensive coordinator before next season. One name to keep an eye on is current linebackers coach Clark Lea. Lea coached linebackers under Elko at Wake Forest and Notre Dame.
In fact, this may be the best route for the Irish, who likely will want to keep a similar defensive scheme. It may also be the only way for Notre Dame to retain Lea’s services.
