Notre Dame defeated Chicago State tonight 105-66. As much as Chicago State tried to make it a contest in the second half, Notre Dame continued to hold a big lead. The game was never in question. TJ Gibbs paced the way for the Irish with 23 points, and Bonzie Colson was one rebound away from 3rd double-double in 3 games this season. As a team, Notre shot 62% from the floor and 45.5% from beyond the arc.
TJ GIBBS HAS ARRIVED
Gibbs might not be the team’s best guard, but the argument can certainly be made. He is faster, stronger and playing with much more confidence in his second season. After losing Steve Vasturia and VJ Beachem to graduation, Gibbs has answered the call and more. He should be relied upon as a top scorer for Notre Dame.
NOTRE DAME’S DEPTH PROVES READY
Notre Dame needed players like Gibbs and Pflueger to take a step forward this year, but they also needed the depth to expand beyond them. Those guys were already apart of the rotation last year; John Mooney, Elijah Burns and DJ Harvey were not. So far, these three look more than capable of giving the Irish important, quality minutes. DJ Harvey was especially impressive tonight, scoring 16 points.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE IRISH
The next time Notre Dame will play is in the Maui Invitational in Hawaii. They will square off against the local school Chaminade on Monday. Assuming they win, Michigan or LSU awaits them in a semi-final matchup. The other side of the bracket consists of #6 Wichita State, VCU, Marquette and California.
