Notre Dame adds highly touted defensive back

2018 defensive back out of Chicago, Houston Griffith, has committed to Notre Dame. Griffith also attends IMG Academy down in Florida but he’s orginially from the Midwest.

After the coaching carousel around College Football and at Florida State, where Houston had been committed to, he backed off of his pledge once Jimbo Fisher decided to bolt and after the horrible season the Noles had. The Irish seemed to always be in it from the beginning for Griffith. He’s been a priority for the staff since the beginning as well and it finally paid off. The Under Armour All-American got a few visits from the coaching staff and he decided it was time to pull the trigger and make Notre Dame his home.

The “big city, big college” is what I think held him up from originally deciding South Bend was the right place, but academics and being closer to home pretty much sold itself and then you add in the need for a guy like him on the Irish roster. Griffith holds 37 offers from Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, Florida and others.

What does Houston Griffith bring?

The 6’1 200 pound defensive back has the frame to be a corner, where he plays in high school, or move to the safety position at the next level. I think the staff is going to try him out at corner first, because of the need there, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he finds his home in Mike Elko’s defense at safety.

What I think Elko will be most excited about is his open field tackling which the Irish have struggled with for the past few years. He clearly has the height to match up with opponents top big receivers and has good control when the ball is in the air. If he gets a quicker get off and increases his overall speed, that’s when I think being a college cornerback will be clock work for him. Getting into the Strength and Conditioning program will be tremendous for Griffith when he gets to South Bend.

On the field, Coach Lyght and Elko will have a lot of fun with Griffith and figuring out where he can best develop. This is an outstanding get for the defense and I think he could make an impact right away next year, wether that’s solid reps throughout the season or even on special teams. Keep an eye out for this kid, especially since he’s an early enrollee. With Griffith being commit number 19, look for the Irish to try and add at least two more defensive backs this recruiting cycle.
